{"id":169,"date":"2008-12-19T01:13:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-19T01:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/patrologialatinagraecaetorientalis.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/19\/tarikh-al-rusul-wa-al-muluk\/"},"modified":"2008-12-19T01:13:00","modified_gmt":"2008-12-19T01:13:00","slug":"tarikh-al-rusul-wa-al-muluk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/plgo.org\/?p=169","title":{"rendered":"Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color:rgb(153,0,0);font-size:85%;\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">[Alia Varia][Arabic, Latin]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"><b>Abu Ja&#8217;far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari<\/b> (838-923 \u0623\u0628\u0648 \u062c\u0639\u0641\u0631 \u0645\u062d\u0645\u062f \u0628\u0646 \u062c\u0631\u064a\u0631 \u0627\u0644\u0637\u0628\u0631\u064a) was one of the earliest, most prominent and famous <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Persian_people\" title=\"Persian people\">Persian<\/a><sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-0\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>1<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-1\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>2<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Historian\" title=\"Historian\">historians<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tafsir\" title=\"Tafsir\">exegetes of the Qur&#8217;an<\/a>, most famous for his <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_the_Prophets_and_Kings\" title=\"History of the Prophets and Kings\">Tarikh al-Tabari<\/a><\/i> (<i>History of the Prophets and Kings<\/i>) and <i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tafsir_al-Tabari\" title=\"Tafsir al-Tabari\">Tafsir al-Tabari<\/a><\/i>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight:bold;\">Works<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">At Tabari wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History\" title=\"History\">history<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Theology\" title=\"Theology\">theology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qur%27an\" title=\"Qur'an\">Qur&#8217;anic<\/a> commentary. His legal writings were published first and then continued to appear throughout his life. Next were his commentaries on the Qur&#8217;an. Lastly, his history was published. Despite a style that makes it seem he drew largely on oral sources, written material (both published and unpublished) provided him with the bulk of his information. His biographers stress his reverence for scholarship and his keen intent to offer his readers hard fact.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">He didn&#8217;t hesitate to express his independent judgement (<i><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ijtihad\" title=\"Ijtihad\">ijtihad<\/a><\/i>) <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-25\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>26<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>. He stated his assessment as to which of the sources he cited was accurate <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-Rosenthal_nopage-10\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>11<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>. This was more understandably an aspect of his theology than of his history. This does not mean he saw himself as innovative. On the contrary, he was very much opposed to religious innovation. The story goes that when he was near death ibn Kamil suggested he forgive his enemies. He said he was willing to do so, except for the person who had described him as an innovator <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-26\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>27<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>. In general Tabari&#8217;s approach was conciliatory and moderate, seeking harmonious agreement between conflicting opinions <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-27\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>28<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Initially he identified as a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shafi%27ite\" title=\"Shafi'ite\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Shafi&#8217;ite<\/a> in law and Shafi&#8217;ites were happy to have him so considered. He later was seen as one establishing his own school. Although he had come to Baghdad in youth to study from Hanbal, he incurred the vehement wrath of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hanbalite\" title=\"Hanbalite\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Hanbalites<\/a> <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-28\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>29<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>. Tabari&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madhhab\" title=\"Madhhab\" class=\"mw-redirect\">madhhab<\/a> is usually designated by the name <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jariri\" title=\"Jariri\">Jariri<\/a> after his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patronymic\" title=\"Patronymic\">patronymic<\/a> <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-29\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>30<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>. However, in the keenly competitive atmosphere of the times, his school failed to endure <sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muhammad_ibn_Jarir_al-Tabari#cite_note-30\" title=\"\"><span>[<\/span>31<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">His wrote extensively; his voluminous corpus containing two main titles:<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/History_of_the_Prophets_and_Kings_%28book%29\" title=\"History of the Prophets and Kings (book)\" class=\"mw-redirect\">History of the Prophets and Kings<\/a><\/b> &#8211; (Arabic: \u062a\u0627\u0631\u064a\u062e \u0627\u0644\u0631\u0633\u0644 \u0648\u0627\u0644\u0645\u0644\u0648\u0643 or <i>Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk or Tarikh al-Tabari)<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The first of the two large works, generally known as the <i>Annals<\/i> (Arabic <i>Tarikh al-Tabari<\/i>). This is a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Universal_history\" title=\"Universal history\">universal history<\/a> from the time of Qur&#8217;anic <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creation_myth\" title=\"Creation myth\">Creation<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/915\" title=\"915\">AD 915<\/a>, and is renowned for its detail and accuracy concerning <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muslim\" title=\"Muslim\">Muslim<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East\" title=\"Middle East\">Middle Eastern<\/a> history. Tabari&#8217;s work is a major primary source for the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zanj_Revolt\" title=\"Zanj Revolt\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Zanj Revolt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_commentary_on_the_Qur%27an_%28book%29\" title=\"The commentary on the Qur'an (book)\" class=\"mw-redirect\">The commentary on the Qur&#8217;an<\/a><\/b> &#8211; (Arabic: <i>al-musamma Jami al-bayan fi ta&#8217;wil al-Qur&#8217;an or Tafsir al-Tabari)<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">His second great work was the commentary on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qur%27an\" title=\"Qur'an\">Qur&#8217;an<\/a>, (Arabic <i>Tafsir al-Tabari<\/i>), which was marked by the same fullness of detail as the <i>Annals<\/i>. The size of the work and the independence of judgment in it seem to have prevented it from having a large circulation, but scholars such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baghawi\" title=\"Baghawi\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Baghawi<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Suyuti\" title=\"Suyuti\" class=\"mw-redirect\">Suyuti<\/a> used it largely. It was used in compiling the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tafsir_ibn_Kathir\" title=\"Tafsir ibn Kathir\">Tafsir ibn Kathir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:justify;\"> <\/div>\n<ul style=\"text-align:justify;\">\n<li>A <b>third great work<\/b> was begun by Tabari.
