Offtopic. Guettée: The papacy its historic origin and primitive relations with the Eastern churches

A catholic priest who becomes an orthodox, involved in the sad and violent movements regarding the promulgation of the 1854 catholic dogma about the Immaculate Concepcion of the Holy Virgin, this writter make several books where shows a clear and high argumentation about some topics very difficult, even today.

An article of 1992 show the process involved in the pass from the catholic church into the orthodox, you can read the whole article here.

In the quotes taked from the self writtings of Guettée, we can read [i copy from the original article]:

“From my conversations with His Grace,” wrote Fr. Guettée, “it became clear that although formally I was not Orthodox, I was nevertheless a genuinely Orthodox writer….And I fervently desired to become Orthodox in deed, i.e., to belong to the Russian Church.” An exception was made and, by order of the Holy Synod, Guettée was received into the Orthodox Church in his clerical rank (under the present circumstances such economy would clearly be inadmissible). “I became Orthodox,” said Fr. Guettée, “without having read a single book about Orthodoxy, simply having studied the Fathers of the Church, the decrees of the first ecumenical councils, and the incontestable facts of the history of the Church.”

The book what here we share deals with the trouble of the papacy, his origins and the historic development in the first centuries of the christianism.

It is not a easy reading, several proposes and statues strike us to a new points of view about some ‘pre-existent’ historical concepts.

We take the Roman episcopate at the origin of Christianity, follow it through centuries, and are able to prove incontestably, that during eight centuries the spiritual Papacy, as we understand it at the present day, had no existence ; that the bishop of Rome was during three centuries only a bishop^ with the same rank as the others that in the fourth century he received a primacy of honor without universal jurisdiction ; that this honor has no other foundation than the decrees of the Church; that his restricted jurisdiction over certain neighboring churches is supported only upon a custom legalized by Councils.
As for the universal sovereignty, absolute, of divine right—in other words, the Papacy—facts and catholic testimony of the first eight centuries condemn instead of sustaining it.
History reveals to us the Papacy, after several fruitless attempts, taking its birth from circumstances and establishing itself in the ninth century, with its double political and ecclesiastical character. Its real founder was Adrian L Nicholas I. chiefly contributed to its development ; Gregory VII. raised it to its loftiest pitch.

A book of hard reading, but a good analysis under the patristic and apostolic thoughts.

Desert Christians: An Introduction to the Literature of Early Monasticism

Thanks to P. Stefan, who is sharing this work.

In the fourth century, the deserts of Egypt became the nerve center of a radical new movement, what we now call monasticism. Groups of Christians-from illiterate peasants to learned intellectuals-moved out to the wastelands beyond the Nile Valley and, in the famous words of Saint Athanasius, made the desert a city. In so doing, they captured the imagination of the ancient world. They forged techniques of prayer and asceticism, of discipleship and spiritual direction, that have remained central to Christianity ever since. Seeking to map the soul’s long journey to God and plot out the subtle vagaries of the human heart, they created and inspired texts that became classics of Western spirituality. These Desert Christians were also brilliant storytellers, some of Christianity’s finest.
This book introduces the literature of early monasticism. It examines all the best-known works, including Athanasius’ Life of Antony , the Lives of Pachomius , and the so-called Sayings of the Desert Fathers . Later chapters focus on two pioneers of monastic theology: Evagrius Ponticus, the first great theoretician of Christian mysticism; and John Cassian, who brought Egyptian monasticism to the Latin West. Along the way, readers are introduced to path-breaking discoveries-to new texts and recent archeological finds-that have revolutionized contemporary scholarship on monastic origins. Included are fascinating snippets from papyri and from little-known Coptic, Syriac, and Ethiopic texts. Interspersed in each chapter are illustrations, maps, and diagrams that help readers sort through the key texts and the richly-textured world of early monasticism.
Geared to a wide audience and written in clear, jargon-free prose, Desert Christians offers the most comprehensive and accessible introduction to early monasticism.

History of dogmas – 1910, by J. Tixeront

Citind cartea parintelui Ioan G. Coman, “Si Cuvantul trup S-a facut“, edit. Mitropoliei Banatului, Timisoara, 1993, am observat ca aparatul critic apeleaza in bogatele note si la “Histoire des dogmes dans l’antiquité chrétienne”. Prin urmare am purces la cautarea acestor volume, dar, din pacate, din cele 3 volume originale in franceza ale teologului Joseph Tixeront am gasit doar 2, si anume:

THE CREEDS OF CHRISTENDOM,

WITH

A HISTORY AND CRITICAL NOTES

BY

PHILIP SCHAFF, D. D., LL. D.,

PROFESSOR OF BIBLICAL LITERATURE IN THE UNION THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY, N. Y.

IN THREE VOLUMES

THIRD EDITION-REVISED AND ENLARGED.

NEW YORK:

HARPER & BROTHERS, FRANKLIN SQUARE.

1881.

V. 1. The history of creeds.

V. 2. The Greek and Latin creeds, with translations.

V. 3. The evangelical Protestant creeds, with translations.

PREFACE.

A ‘symbolical library’ that contains the creeds and confessions of all Christian denominations fills a vacuum in theological and historical literature. It is surprising that it has not been supplied long ago. Sectarian exclusiveness or doctrinal indifferentism may have prevented, it. Other symbolical collections are confined to particular denominations and periods. In this work the reader will find the authentic material for the study of Comparative Theology—Symbolics, Polemics, and Irenies. In a country like ours, where people of all creeds meet in daily contact, this study ought to command more attention than it has hitherto received.
The First Volume has expanded into a doctrinal history of the Church, so far as it is embodied in public standards of faith. The most important and fully developed symbolical systems—the Vatican Romanism, the Lutheranism of the Formula of Concord, and the Calvinism of the Westminster standards— have been subjected to a critical analysis. The author has endeavored to combine the àleteúein én àgápe and the agapán en aletéia, and to be mindful of the golden motto, In necessariis imitas, in dubiis libertas, in omnibus caritas. Honest and earnest controversy, conducted in a Christian and catholic spirit, promotes true and lasting union. Polemics looks to Irenies —the aim of war is peace.
The Second Volume contains the Scripture Confessions, the ante-Nicene Rules of Faith, the OEcumenical, the Greek, and the Latin Creeds, from the Confession of Peter down to the Vatican Decrees. It includes also the best Russian Catechism and the recent Old Catholic Union Propositions of the Bonn Conferences.
The Third Volume is devoted to the Lutheran, Anglican, Calvinistic, and the later Protestant Confessions of Faith. The documents of the Third Part (pp. 707-876) have never been collected before.
The creeds and confessions are given in the original languages from the best editions, and are accompanied by translations for the convenience of the English reader.’1
While these volumes were passing through the press several learned treatises on the ancient creeds by Lumby, Swainson, Hort, Caspari, and others have appeared, though not too late to be noticed in the final revision. The literature has been brought down to the close of 1876. I trust that nothing of importance has escaped my attention.
I take pleasure in acknowledging my obligation to several distinguished divines, in America and England, for valuable information concerning the denominations to which they belong, and for several contributions, which appear under the writers’ names.2 In a history of conflicting creeds it is wise to consult representative men as well as books, in order to secure strict accuracy and impartiality, which are the cardinal virtues of a historian.
May this repository of creeds and confessions promote a better understanding among the Churches of Christ. The divisions of Christendom bring to light the various aspects and phases of revealed truth, and will be overruled at last for a deeper and richer harmony, of which Christ is the key-note. In him and by him all problems of theology and history will be solved. The nearer believers of different creeds approach the Christological centre, the better they will understand and love each other.

Jewish Roots of Eastern Christian Mysticism

The interdisciplinary seminar on the Jewish Roots of Eastern Christian Mysticism is designed as the internet version of an ongoing research seminar of graduate students at the department of theology of Marquette University (Milwaukee, USA). The seminar is directed by Alexander Golitzin, a professor of eastern Christian theology (Marquette University) and Andrei Orlov, an assistant professor of Christian Origins (Marquette University).

The internet version of the seminar was constituted on April 17, 2002. It is a regular text seminar consisting of scholars and graduate students of ancient languages, systematic theology, philosophy, patristics, biblical exegesis, and Judaism.

This project seeks to provide a forum for electronically mediated scholarly discussion about Jewish mystical traditions in the eastern Christian texts.

It has a rich bibliography with electronic resources.
