Definiciones.

Rather than seeking to assemble in a single definition for the meaning and scope of the Patrologia, and the concept that currently owns the term ‘Father’ of the Church have been added in the form of static pages with different texts the more common words and visions salient texts taken directly from academic intentions.
It will be noted therefore that the definitions are listed Quasten, Bardenhewer, transcribed from the issues that I have on hand, and whose references appear at the bottom of each page.
Where possible ensure that such transcripts are accompanied by corresponding digital versions in both formats. Doc and. Pdf, printing enabling stakeholders as they see fit.

Dossiers.

RelTech… working on Garnier editions…

As all of us know, the RelTech house is working in an new project to scan and distribute via images the contents of the Patrologia Latina, at this time the first two ‘sample’ volumes are available in this address.

The great surprise is that this house is not working directly on the Migne edition, but the Garnier Fratres, this is the -almost- ‘second’ edition of this corpus, with all the issues this can have.

Tertullian’s frontispiece.

St. Ambroise’s frontispiece.

First of all, the content can be different to the first Migne’s editions, this means in all moment the user must have in mind this edition can be out the first align of the original editions of this work.

Second, i don’t know exactly the reach of this issue, but the database provided by the Chadwyck-Healey can have too some big differences with this last digitazion’s project.

The advantage i see is the price, and usability, keeping in mind the bad quality of almost all the volumes inside the Googlebooks project, this edition can be more useful and useful.

And, better of all, this project seems to be a better format for imprints, that only  the Gallica volumes reach, but inclusive the Gallica volumes several times have big troubles with the margins, cutting sadly the first or last letters, and leaving incomplete the whole text [Venerabilis Beda, I. PL. XC].

The site seems to be waiting to finish the last details of the digitazion and packing in dvd format, until the release day the total amount of this corpus will be available to customers in general.

Automated translation of PL and PG?

Recent advances in computerized language translation would seem to offer a reasonable possibility of making ‘acceptable’ (or ‘usable’) translations of the entire PL and PG corpora into any modern language very quickly.

I am going to run this idea by some computer scientists, but also I wanted to mention it here to solicit opinions, ideas, or possible suggestions.

How does such an idea strike the group members?

Is anyone aware of existing plans to do this?

Are any members academically affiliated and potentially interested in approaching computer science departments at their universities with an aim of possible collaboration with them?

Offtopic. Guettée: The papacy its historic origin and primitive relations with the Eastern churches

A catholic priest who becomes an orthodox, involved in the sad and violent movements regarding the promulgation of the 1854 catholic dogma about the Immaculate Concepcion of the Holy Virgin, this writter make several books where shows a clear and high argumentation about some topics very difficult, even today.

An article of 1992 show the process involved in the pass from the catholic church into the orthodox, you can read the whole article here.

In the quotes taked from the self writtings of Guettée, we can read [i copy from the original article]:

“From my conversations with His Grace,” wrote Fr. Guettée, “it became clear that although formally I was not Orthodox, I was nevertheless a genuinely Orthodox writer….And I fervently desired to become Orthodox in deed, i.e., to belong to the Russian Church.” An exception was made and, by order of the Holy Synod, Guettée was received into the Orthodox Church in his clerical rank (under the present circumstances such economy would clearly be inadmissible). “I became Orthodox,” said Fr. Guettée, “without having read a single book about Orthodoxy, simply having studied the Fathers of the Church, the decrees of the first ecumenical councils, and the incontestable facts of the history of the Church.”

The book what here we share deals with the trouble of the papacy, his origins and the historic development in the first centuries of the christianism.

It is not a easy reading, several proposes and statues strike us to a new points of view about some ‘pre-existent’ historical concepts.

We take the Roman episcopate at the origin of Christianity, follow it through centuries, and are able to prove incontestably, that during eight centuries the spiritual Papacy, as we understand it at the present day, had no existence ; that the bishop of Rome was during three centuries only a bishop^ with the same rank as the others that in the fourth century he received a primacy of honor without universal jurisdiction ; that this honor has no other foundation than the decrees of the Church; that his restricted jurisdiction over certain neighboring churches is supported only upon a custom legalized by Councils.
As for the universal sovereignty, absolute, of divine right—in other words, the Papacy—facts and catholic testimony of the first eight centuries condemn instead of sustaining it.
History reveals to us the Papacy, after several fruitless attempts, taking its birth from circumstances and establishing itself in the ninth century, with its double political and ecclesiastical character. Its real founder was Adrian L Nicholas I. chiefly contributed to its development ; Gregory VII. raised it to its loftiest pitch.

A book of hard reading, but a good analysis under the patristic and apostolic thoughts.
